I Hate This Part

I just finished A Game of Thrones.

And they killed one of my favorite characters.

At first I didn't believe it. The narrative pans away at the last second and I kept desperately hoping that he was going to show up again in one the very few chapters left before the end. I wanted it to be one of those times when the author convinces the reader that the character in dead only to bring him back in some ludicrous fashion. You know those times where the ludicrousness doesn't bother you because you're just so happy that the character is still alive? I so wanted that. I was being pretty stubborn about it too, actually. I kept thinking, He can't be dead. Not really. They can't kill him. Not for good. But I'm afraid that G.R.R. Martin did in fact kill him. Every single related character had confirmed his death by the end of the book.

There's still this sliver of me, though, that thinks Martin just did a really good job convincing me; that my beloved character is going to show up in book two or three or four and I'm going to be like, I KNEW it!

(A girl can hope, can't she??)

  1. That's so sad. When an author can make you so connected to a character, that you just don't want them to die - you know it's a good book. :)

  2. Now I want to read Game of Thrones since everyone seems to love it so much. :)

  3. That's why I started it :) I had heard a lot of good things about it so when the lady I work for offered to let me borrow the series, I jumped at the chance. It's definitely an adult series, not YA. It's really quite good - the cast of characters is very compelling

  4. I KNOW! I was like, they're not doing this, they're not going to do this (I'm watching the series) but then they DID IT! The 'dance teacher' was bad enough...

Even though it's hard to take, I like the fact that it's so unpredictable. It makes it very exciting. Going to watch the last episode on Monday...can't wait!

  5. I think watching it was probably harder than reading it. In the book, there's a couple chapters of prolonged hope that somehow, at the last second, something happened to save him. In the show (which I really want to see), it'd be immediate with no chance of denial. I still can't believe they did it!

Very true, very true. I can't imagine what's going to happen in the rest of the books (and seasons, if they keep it goind).

  6. They're starting filming of series 2 in Belfast next month. I may go up to have a look! No, it looked like everything was going to be ok so many times and then...

Well. You know what happened :(

  7. Sweet! Oh, wow, you could do that? That would be really neat.

Really? Oh. Well, then I guess it was just awful all the way around :( At least Sansa finally saw the light about Joeffrey. And it was a very noble, heroic death - which makes it a little easier to swallow.

  8. that's too sad.

I can't read a book where my favorite character dies. I just can't. I'll just let everyone else tell me about it.

  9. I know! :(

I think I've only read one other book where a favorite character dies. As long as there are other characters I care about, I can still read the book. I just don't like it quite as much as I would have otherwise.
